Art Port Townsend - The Olympic Peninsula's online gallery and center for the Arts and artist's resources. Handcrafted jewelry by Madelyn Pitts DESIGNS from NATURE Growing up in Southern California and on the Olympic Peninsula, I learned early in my life how important the beauty of Nature is to me. My family home was in West Los Angeles, but my summer home was on my grandparent's farm in Quilcene, where I now live. I have childhood memories of dogwood trees, the texture of mountains forested by fir, cedar and alder, the shape of sky created by a maple tree's branching form. My first pieces of jewelry were inspired by the old almond trees surrounding my home in Davis, California, where I first learned the lost wax method of creating and producing sculpture. The more trees have inspired my designs, the more I have discovered trees' presence -in the branching forms that fill our bodies, in the way we structure our thought patterns, in the symbolic trees of our religions and myths. Other eyes may see water's forms and sunlight's patterns, wind's sculpting of sand and rock in my designs. Tree is the sculptor who teaches me of Unity.
